FAQ about OPC Server
Here is our Frequenctly Asked Questions about our OPC Server
What is OPC UA?
OPC UA (Open Platform Communications Unified Architecture) is the successor to OPC DA (Data Access) and a major advancement in industrial interoperability. Unlike OPC DA, which focused on Windows-based systems, OPC UA is platform-independent, enabling seamless data exchange across diverse devices, systems, and environments. Designed to unify communication across various industrial protocols, OPC UA supports real-time data, alarms, events, and historical data, making it ideal for IIoT and Industry 4.0 applications.
The OPC standard is maintained globally by the OPC Foundation and its members.
Key Benefits of OPC UA
- Interoperability: OPC UA allows OPC clients to access data from multiple devices and protocols simply by connecting to the OPC server, making it easier to integrate diverse systems into a unified network.
- Enhanced Security: OPC UA supports multiple security policies, including encryption standards such as Basic128RSA15, Basic256, and Basic256SHA256. This ensures data integrity and secure communication across the network.
- Scalability: OPC UA is suitable for everything from small-scale systems to complex, enterprise-level deployments, making it a reliable choice for companies looking to scale up.
- Cross-Platform Compatibility: Being platform-independent, OPC UA can operate on various systems and architectures, including Windows, Linux, and embedded systems, enabling flexibility across IT and OT environments.
- Standardized Information Modeling: OPC UA allows for the creation of standardized information models, which simplifies data interpretation and reduces the need for custom programming or middleware solutions.
In summary, OPC UA has become a core standard in industrial communication, simplifying data integration, reducing development time, and supporting secure and scalable deployments across industries.
What is the difference between and OPC UA server and client?
In the OPC UA (Unified Architecture) framework, the OPC UA Server and OPC UA Client work together to facilitate secure, standardized communication between devices, systems, and applications in industrial automation.
What is an OPC UA Server?
An OPC UA Server is a software application that interfaces with industrial equipment and sensors to collect, process, and organize data in a standardized format. The OPC UA Server makes this data available to any OPC UA Client that connects to it, regardless of the devices or protocols being used. By acting as a data aggregator, the OPC UA Server ensures seamless data access across complex networks of devices and systems. Key responsibilities of an OPC UA Server include:
- Data Collection: Gathering real-time data from connected devices, such as PLCs, sensors, and control systems.
- Data Structuring: Organizing data using OPC UA’s information modeling capabilities, making it interpretable for any OPC UA Client.
- Data Security: Enforcing secure connections through encryption, authentication, and authorization policies to ensure safe data transfer.
What is an OPC UA Client?
An OPC UA Client is a software application that connects to one or more OPC UA Servers to access and interact with the data they provide. OPC UA Clients are typically integrated into SCADA systems, HMIs (Human-Machine Interfaces), ERP systems, or other industrial applications that require access to operational data. The OPC UA Client can request real-time data, historical data, or even subscribe to specific data updates, enabling efficient monitoring and control of industrial processes. Primary functions of an OPC UA Client include:
- Data Retrieval: Accessing and visualizing data from OPC UA Servers to provide insights into industrial operations.
- Command Execution: Sending commands or adjustments back to connected devices through the server, facilitating control over equipment and systems.
- Subscription to Updates: Subscribing to specific data points or events, enabling real-time updates and alerts for proactive monitoring.
How OPC UA Server and OPC UA Client Work Together
The OPC UA Server and OPC UA Client follow a client-server model in which the client initiates communication with the server to access, retrieve, and control data. Here’s how they work together:
- Connection Establishment: The OPC UA Client initiates a secure connection to the OPC UA Server, authenticating as required by the server’s security policies.
- Data Access and Subscription: Once connected, the OPC UA Client can browse and retrieve data or subscribe to updates for real-time monitoring. The OPC UA Server continuously collects and updates the data from connected devices, making it available to the client.
- Command Execution: In some setups, the OPC UA Client can send commands through the server to adjust device settings or operational parameters, making the client-server relationship interactive and responsive.
This setup enables seamless data exchange, real-time control, and secure interoperability across diverse systems in industrial environments. With an OPC UA Server providing data and an OPC UA Client accessing and utilizing it, companies can achieve robust, scalable, and secure communication across their automation infrastructure.

What security features are supported?
The OPC Server offers a comprehensive set of security features to meet the growing demand for data protection. These include robust encryption standards, user authentication, access control, and support for multiple security policies, ensuring secure and reliable communication across your industrial network.
Security modes: None, Sign, Sign & Encrypt
Security policies: None, Basic128RSA15, Basic265, Basic256SHA256
Authentication: None, Username & password
How do I set up the OPC UA server with existing eqipment?
To expose data from existing equipment to the OPC server, the following steps need to be completed:
- Install connectors for the equipment and the OPC server.
- Configure data items for the equipment.
- Set up the OPC server with authentication and security parameters.
- Map the equipment data items to the OPC UA server to automatically generate nodes.
How long does it take to get started?
The time required to configure the OPC Server and expose data from equipment depends on the complexity and the number of data points to be configured.
Setting up the OPC server and exposing pre-configured data items from the equipment typically takes only a few minutes.
For example, configuring around 20 data points from a machine and exposing them on the OPC server would take approximately 15 minutes.
Can I integrate the OPC UA server with my existing SCADA or MES system?
Absolutely. Our OPC UA server is designed to work seamlessly with SCADA, MES, and ERP systems, enabling data sharing and control across your entire industrial environment.
Including everything which has an OPC UA client embedded in their solution.
Can I expose data from MQTT, SQL and cloud services to OPC UA?
Yes!
Any data coming into SIA Connect can be easily exposed on the OPC UA server.
This means you can seamlessly expose data from any cloud service or IT solution to the OPC server, just as effortlessly as with machine data.
