Modbus
Modbus gateway
Modbus gateway
for IIoT, protocol conversion & data collection
What is Modbus?
Modbus is a industrial protocols widely used among control system and by many vendors categorized as a standard for secondary equipment such as meters, sensors etc.. Originally developed by Modicon in 1979 it was designed to enable communication between OT equipment, sensors and other equipment.
The original Modbus is based on serial communication on RS-232 or RS-485 and was in 2000 expanded to also support communication on ethernet. It comes in 3 major variations for communication medium:
- Modbus RTU (RS-232 or RS-485)
- Modbus TCP
- Modbus RTU over TCP (RTU encapsulated in TCP to bridge the two)
Since Modbus is an open standard without strict definitions for endianness, byte ordering, or string swapping, there are many variations in how data is packed, leading to differences in implementation across devices.
Modbus Gateway
SIA Connect offers a comprehensive suite of supported industrial assets, protocols, and cloud and database connections, with access to 30+ protocols and unlimited cloud services, including support for MQTT and REST APIs, among others.
Transform your industrial assets and devices into IIoT devices in 5 minutes using its intuitive “on-device” Edge Portal for seamless configuration.
Available as plug’n’play hardware (Standalone) and software (ANY-Ware)
Modbus OPC server
The SIA OPC-UA server allows clients on any enterprise level to integrate & access data with all the automation- and building protocols supported by SIA.
The secure communication channel of OPC-UA in SIA provides a hassle-free IT / OT convergence with top notch security with support for encryption and user authentication!

Frequenctly Asked Questions about Modbus
What Modbus variations are supported?
We support the following Modbus variations:
- Modbus TCP
- Modbus RTU (RS232 and RS485)
- Modbus RTU over TCP
The following data variations are supported:
- Endianness: Big endian and Little endian
- Byte Order: First byte high and First byte low
- String Endianness: Big endian and Little endian
- String Byte Order: First byte high and First byte low
As some vendors has different endianness and byte order for strings and numeric values you can select individually

What databases can Modbus exchange data with?
The solution can exchange data with the following databases:
- MS SQL
- Azure SQL
- PostgreSQL
- MySQL / MariaDB
- InfluxDB (REST API)
- MongoDB (REST API)
What is Modbus RTU over TCP?
Modbus RTU over TCP is a variation of the Modbus protocol that encapsulates Modbus RTU messages within TCP/IP packets. This allows traditional Modbus RTU communication to be performed over Ethernet networks, combining the simplicity of RTU with the reliability and widespread use of modern network infrastructure. It also allows the serial network to be integrated with an Ethernet network and also enables exchange information across multiple Modbus RTU networks.
